Advanced Practice Nurse, Oncology Certified Nurse
Mary Vecchio received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Kean College and her Master of Science in Nursing from Seton Hall University. She is certified as an advanced practice nurse by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, certified as an oncology nurse by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, and is certified as an advanced practice nurse in the state of New Jersey. She is also a certified tobacco treatment specialist. Having worked in the field of adult oncology for over 25 years, Mary has provided direct patient care in both in-patient and out-patient settings, caring for both chemotherapy and radiation therapy patients. Mary worked in HRCC’s Community Education and Outreach program for 11 years, serving a diverse population of adults and children, educating them about the value of healthy lifestyle choices, the importance of cancer screening, and the need to be connected to a medical home. She has been the advanced practice nurse for the Family Risk Assessment Program since 2015.

Mary was awarded National Nurse of the Year by Nursing Spectrum/Nurse.com in the area of Community Service in 2009. She has been active in the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), including having served as coordinator of their Prevention and Early Detection Special Interest Group. Mary has given several presentations to local and national audiences, including community presentations, radio and television programs, hospital Grand Rounds, national ONS conferences, and a webinar with a national audience. She has spoken about initiatives to improve cancer screenings, cancer advocacy, and the medical management of patients at increased risk for cancer.
